Restaurant Karel 5: elegant dining in the historic heart of Utrecht
A stylish business dinner? A special family occasion? Or a romantic dinner with a kitchen that reaches for the stars? Restaurant Karel 5 in Utrecht (formerly Grand Restaurant Karel V) is the perfect place.
This is where we make culinary dreams happen. Restaurant Karel 5 is a gastronomic restaurant, located in a medieval refectory in the heart of Utrecht. It is where, in bygone days, the friars of the monastery order took their meals. Here, sinful thoughts were taboo, and members were strictly held to the discipline of eating in silence while guarding their thoughts against improper distractions. We are not quite as strict. “Care for another oyster, Sir?”

When you’re here: remember to admire the Coat of Arms of Emperor Charles V in Restaurant Karel 5: a two-headed eagle cut from sandstone. The artefact was recovered on a fireplace surround during restorations in the 1990s and today watches over our restaurant.
“As always excellent What can I say. This is always a pleasure. I very nice restaurant, and hotel as well, with a inventive menu and friendly knowledgeable staff.” (04-2017)
We have been highly impressed by the service and the quality of food of this restaurant. The ambiance is nice in a historic building. All courses were looking like small art pieces and taste was excelent. I was highly impressed by the desert. Various taste of salted caramel and macadamian nuts, presented in kind of golden egg. This was sublime! This place definatively deserves a star! (01-2017)
